Back To The Seven Habits – Journal Entry 003
Old and tattered, pages yellow, I’m gratefully thumbing through a book I read long, long ago.
“Yeah, yeah yeah, I know all about… begin with the end in mind, sharpen the saw, think win-win, and …. wait, let me think, what are the other ones again?” were my words that motivated me pick the book up again.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The RAVE of self-help books released during the dawn of my adulthood. 1989.
I’ve been eyeballing it for quite some time now. Never really that motivated to pick it back up. After all, I’ve read it already. So many other – just released – titles out there I’d love to dig into and new just seems better. Doesn’t it?
Sitting there dead center on the bookshelf, eye level, I’d see it everytime I scan for a book to pull. Yet, every time, I’d always reach for the more exciting, seemingly more satisfying, unread book fresh from Amazon.
So, from the bookshelf, it slowly made it’s way to the kitchen table, sat there for a couple days, then to my night stand and eventually into the bathroom where I could – you know – “multi-task”. Surely, since I’ve read it before, I could just thumb through it on short mini-breaks through the week.
But, then something weird happened…
I’m going through this classic again and it seems as fresh as the first time I picked it up. Like I’ve never read it before. Maybe it’s because I’m reading it through the lens of greater life experience? I think so.
I think I was 20 when I first read this classic. I’m now 46.
If you’re like me and have read the book years ago, I highly encourage you to open it back up. You’ve changed since you last read it. Maybe you’ll get more out of it the 2nd or 3rd time you read it like I am. It’s damn good.
If you can’t recite the 7 habits, you aren’t using them to benefit your life. If you CAN recite the 7 habits I challenge you to write a short one page essay on each one explaining the concept. I’d be willing to bet that you would be stumped. A clear indication that revisiting this book is in your best interest. So, take the easier route and just go back and read this book again. You will be so happy that you did.

Not 3 or 4. FOUR.
It’s specific. It’s a solid goal, not a squirmy(ish) “should do” with an easy out. A solid commitment. So, it’s fitting that I’m getting back into the thought process of the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. After all, it’s all about character ethics which is precisely why I’m committing to consistent, public journaling.
